Dee Dee Warwick--You're No Good (1963)

Before we get started, please allow me to thank so many of you who have provided support for my family over the last couple of months. It's been a trying time filled with some joys and some sadness, especially with death of my Mom. However, after taking some time off from all musical endeavors it's time to get back to what I love doing...listening and writing about music. Thanks for supporting the blog AND the radio show.
--------------------------------------

Dee Dee Warwick was born in 1942 and was the youngest daughter of Mancel and Lee Warwick. She began singing gospel with her sister Dionne and her Aunt Cissy Houston in their church in New Jersey. The three eventually formed the group, The Gospelaires. After a performance in 1959, her and Dionne were contracted to do session work in the area. They did backing vocals for many acts out of the New York area, but also worked on their own solo career. Dee Dee's first single on the charts was this song written by Clint Ballard Jr and produced by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It never cracked the top 100 for Dee Dee, but was a hit the next year for Betty Everett and was a No. 1 song for Linda Ronstadt in 1974. Dee Dee had a number of successes, especially on  the R&B charts, but was never able to fully come out from behind her sister's shadow.

Sunday Morning Vault: Hal David (1921-2012)

Yesterday we lost one of the great American lyricists of the last 50 years. Hal David with his songwriting partner Burt Bacharach defined 60's pop music. His timeless lyrics are still being sung by many an artist who's parents were children when they were first performed.
David dabbled in lyric writing, but was preparing for himself a career in journalism. He was writing for the New York Post, when a lucky break allow him an opportunity to write for big band leader Sammy Kaye. Several hits came for Kaye and for Guy Lombardo's band s well. However it was hit meeting with Burt Bacharach in 1957 that would change the life of both men, and of American music. Starting with, "The Story of My Life" written and recorded that year by Marty Robbins, and "Magic Moments" sung by Perry Como, they were off and running.
Their biggest success came though with the collaboration with Dionne Warwick. There was a chemistry between the three that made it impossible to mention one without the other. "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", "Do You Know the Way to San Jose", "Walk On By", and "I Say A Little Prayer" were touchstones of mid-60's pop and are still fresh and inviting today.
The following is a listing of David's biggest songs and a video or two as well.

"The Story of My Life"--Marty Robbins
"Magic Moments"--Perry Como
"(The Man Who Shot) Liberty Vallance"--Gene Pitney
"Only Love Can Break a Heart"--Gene Pitney

"This Guys In Love With You"--Herb Alpert
"Do You Know the Way to San Jose--Dionne Warwick
"Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head"--B.J. Thomas

Happy Birthday to Hal David...

Sorry about the blog not being up yesterday, but spent much of the day in bed sick. Am feeling quite a bit better this morning, but still in a pretty mellow mood. Thank goodness today is Hal David's 90th birthday!

David began as a lyricist in the mid-40's for band leaders like Guy Lombardo and Sammy Kaye, but it was his collaboration with Burt Bacharach that put both of them on the map.

They began working together in 1957 writing, "The Story of My Life" for Marty Robbins in 1957, and from then until the early 70's had an impressive list of hits songs for many artists. Here are three that he had a hand in.... Enjoy your Wednesday.....
